McCarus (speaking English) and Raji Ramuny (speaking Arabic) voice the first four units of the textbook at Ann Arbor in May 1969. (Note: The edition used here is unspecified, and the relationship of these tapes to the item with ID#973 is not known.)
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is Track 2 of the tape called "Elementary Modern Standard Arabic: Drills, Reel 4" (q.v.). It is not known why the two series were dubbed onto the same tape. The WAVE file is converted to an MP3.

R.I. McDavid recreates his 1937 interview with Bernard Bloch: First part, pp. 7-47

McDavid recreates the pronunciation he used for the words elicited from him by Bloch in the interview of summer 1937. The date and place of McDavid's recording are unknown.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is probably a dub of some "original" not otherwise known. McDavid donated this tape to the LLA c. 1981. The WAVE file is converted to an MP3.

K. Kazazis tests native Greek speakers on their readings from the Gospels

Kazazis reads some passages from the Gospels (specifically from John: 18), and then has five native speakers (men and women) voice the same passages apparently as some kind of test.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are the live recordings Kazazis made (apparently) in his office on the U. of C. campus (and at other venues) in 1971 and 1973. It is not known for what purpose they were done. Kazazis himself numbered the tapes. (Gift of the Kazazis estate to the LLA on 28 January 2003) The WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

Sesiones linguisticas: English-language series (c. 1961); The Chiapas Project

Collection Descriptive Notes: 
Norman McQuown, at whose behest these "sesiones linguisticas" were held, both presides over the proceedings and adds his own comments and critiques to the presentations. The location is Chiapas State in Mexico and the date is c. 1961.
Collection Technical Notes: 
According to an e-mail reply to JJT from Nicholas Hopkins (8/22/16), "[W]hat you are talking about are the group discussions we had every trimester break, when Mac would come to Chiapas and call in people from the field to inform him.... Most of these sessions were held in Spanish, however. Maybe early ones (pre-1961) were in English. Note: JJT has decided to give the prefix
"spa" to the WAVE files inasmuch as McQuown himself has labeled these tapes in Spanish, and the Spanish-language series("spa-sesling-spa") is closely related to these in subject matter. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

C.A. Mann administers the standard TAT test to several consultants (male and female) from the "subdivisión" of Cabecera in the "comunidad" of Ocosingo. The dialect specified in the "Roster" for this region is "Tzeltal norteño", though the subjects are apparently Ladinos, who speak only Spanish.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are the original field recordings made in 1961 using BASF tape stock. Note that the penciled numbering on the spines of the boxes (in N.A. McQuown's handwriting) is incorrect; "CM3" is apparently the first tape recorded, and "CM1" is the second. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

McQuown, speaking Spanish, introduces the topic of the session, "La lingüística histórica de la familia mayance". Then Terrence Kaufman, speaking English, discusses comparative Tzeltal-Tzotzil. The year is 1961, and the probable location is Chiapas State in Mexico.

Tape may or may not be the original live recording, and it cannot be determined what its relation is to the July 1961 review tapes (I.D.# 4584) and to the "sesiones linguisticas". WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

Norman McQuown, speaking Spanish, reads 600 vocabulary items to a (female) native speaker, who supplies the Tzotzil equivalents.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are four field recordings done with the same consultant on the same day in 1957. McQuown, continuing the numbering from the 1958 series, assigned the Roman numerals XIX-XXII to this series. (Note: There is no No. XVIII apparently because the number was skipped over.) WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

San Bartolo: The Trio San Bartolo performs (1958)

The Trio San Bartolo sings seven songs (in Spanish) to the accompaniment of guitars. The men are named Gabriel, Edouardo and Salomon, but the location and occasion of the performance are unknown, as is the name of the "recorder".

The Chiapas Project; Tzotzil: San Bartolo field recordings (1961 series)

Harvey B. Sarles (and an unnamed speaker of Spanish) interview several native speakers in the comunidad of Venustiano Carranza (Chiapas) in 1961. On many of these recordings the consultants are asked to give Tzotzil tokens for the Spanish ones, and then are asked to reverse the process (Spanish for Tzotzil).
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes (ten in all) consist of both original live recordings and excerpts taken from originals. Each tape has a code number beginning with letter "S", whose meaning is unknown. When Norman McQuown came to cataloguing these tapes, he continued the numbering with Roman numerals that he gave to all the other "San Bartolo" tapes: Nos. XXV-XXXIV. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.
