Mescalero Apache phonemics (McQuown, 10/24/55)

Collection Descriptive Notes: 
In what appears to be a seminar conducted at the University of Chicago, Norman McQuown reads a list of 41 English tokens, and an (unnamed) native speaker (male) supplies the Apache equivalents.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is a dub of the interview recorded at the University of Chicago on 24 October 1955. The dub constitutes the first 11 minutes of Track 1 of the tape with the barcode A7001206Q). The recording script prepared by McQuown has been scanned (q.v.). WAVE file is converted to an MP3.

Collection Descriptive Notes: 
At this "roundtable", held in mid-December of 1961 in Chiapas, various field workers sum up their findings after two (?) years of research. Julian Pitt-Rivers and Eva Hunt do most of the talking, but others such as Norman McQuown, Nicholas Hopkins, John C.Hotchkiss and Calixta Guiteras-Holmes also contribute. The topics of discussion are confined mainly to family relations, land tenure, politics and religion, and Spanish is the medium of discourse (with a few exceptions).
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are probably the live recordings, though the general sound tends to be somewhat muffled. Norman McQuown wrote all the notes on the back of the tape boxes. WAVE files are converted to MP3s.

Tzotzil: North Tzotzil survey: Thematic apperception tests (A. Rubel, 1961)

Arthur Rubel, speaking Spanish, shows images to various (male) native speakers and has them interpret them (in Spanish).

Tapes are the original field recordings. It was probably Norman McQuown who coded these tapes using "NH" on the (mistaken) assumption that Nicholas Hopkins was the interviewer. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

Ixil: A Swadesh list for Chajúl (1972)

R. Ellott reads tokens from a Spanish-language Swadesh list, and a native of Chajúl (Xul ’Anay?) supplies the Ixil equivalents.

Ixil: "How the people of Ilom lost their lands": Narrative and discussion (1975)

Collection Descriptive Notes: 
Recording on 22 April 1975, Stephen R. Elliott (son of Ray Elliott), speaking Spanish, prompts Martin Caba Arsicona to narrate the story (in Ixil). About half-way into the recording the two of them begin a discussion (in Spanish) of the story, while Elliott also elicits from Caba some biographical information. Notes on the box identify this consultant as "Lengyel informant #4" (from: Aldea Ilom, Municipo de Chajúl, Department of El Quiché, Guatemala).
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is evidently a copy made by Tom Lengyel on 8/07/78 from another copy made "by U. Chicago Language Laboratory...in 1976". It is not clear why the DMA has this copy rather than the 1976 one. WAVE file is converted to an MP3.

A. Medina (wtih N. McQuown prompting in the background) reads the standard vocabulary list (in Spanish), and the native speaker (male) supplies the Tzeltal equivalents. The dialect here is called "Tzeltal central".

Tape is the original field recording. Note: It is not clear whether the use of the Roman numeral "I" indicates that there is necessarily a "II". WAVE file is converted to an MP3.
