K’iche’ Maya texts; Quiche Maya texts on aluminum discs (Andrade, c.1933)

Beginning on 19 January 1933, Manuel Andrade interviewed various native consultants (male) from the Department of El Quiché (and others?) in Guatemala.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Phonograph records are the original, needle-cut aluminum discs. (The 10-inch blank discs were supplied by Walter C. Garwick of New York.) In 1967 John E. Wahl dubbed these discs onto tape.

Collection Descriptive Notes: 
Remigio Cochojil-Gonzalez and Stanley Wick prompt interviews with and elicit vocabulary from numerous native speakers in the Guatemalan departments of Quetzaltenango, Quiché, Totonicapán, and Sololá.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are the 46 original field recordings on five-inch reels (numbered 1-3; 3a-13; 13a-40 and 44-47) which were specifically made for excerpting and inclusion in the "Listening In" sections of the Spoken Quiché course. (Note: these 46 do not include Nos. 38, 39 and 40 on seven-inch reels, which are to be found in another collection.) The handwriting on the back of each box is apparently that of Cochojil-Gonzalez, while the code on the spine of each box was probably assigned by N.A. McQuown. (It was also he who interpolated the three Instituto Biblico Quiché tapes into the list as Nos. 38, 39 and 40.) A text on file ("inventario de las cintas Quiché") lists the tapes and the locale of the recordings through No. 41. As of 10/30/18, JJT has renumbered all the 46 tapes, leaving a gap for Nos. 38, 39 and 40. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

NAM reads the examples from the Shultze-Jena edition of the Quiché classic, the Popol Vuh, for the benefit of the students in his class. His glosses are in Spanish.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is the original studio recording, of which a DAT back-up has been made. Note: The DAT had to be used for making a digital copy since the studio master had become unplayable due to sticky-shed. Text is scanned, and WAVE file is now converted to an MP3.

Selected languages of Huehuetenango: The 100-word lists (McQuown, 1964)

At some unknown date (probably 1964) Norman McQuown dubbed this selection of thirteen linguistic interviews drawn from field recordings he (and an unnamed interviewer) had made in the Department of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. (According to his index,dated 7 October 1984 (q.v.), these languages are called Kanhobal, Mam, Jacaltec, Chuj and Solomec. This record, however, conforms to Ethnologue's nomenclature: "Eastern Jacaltec", Eastern Kanjobal", Mam and "San Sebastian Coatán".
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are the copies McQuown prepared in 1964 apparently for the purpose of facilitating comparisons among these languages. Note: JJT has arbitrarily decided to use "jac" as the ad hoc language code for the WAVE files. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.
