Collection Descriptive Notes:
In this series from 1960-61 Hermitte and her colleagues, Harvey Sarles and R. Radhakrishnan, use several techniques to elicit responses (in both Tzeltal and Spanish) from the natives of Villa las Rosas (Pinola) in Chiapas State. Most often they use the standard vocabulary list, but they may also use other techniques such as the Thematic Apperception Test ("T.A.T."), a series of images designed to evoke imaginative scenarios. The dialect specified here is "Tzeltal sureño".
Collection Technical Notes:
Tapes consist of both original field recordings and (in other cases) copies made for McQuown. (Cf. McQuown's note in the Pinola XV box: "Esther will have others (all including these) copied and sent.") Note: McQuown, in cataloguing these recordings, assigned Roman numerals to them across all the recordings pertaining to Pinola from 1957 on. This series is numbered from "VIII" through "XXVII". WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.
