Bengali: Mymensingh dialect recording; Spoken Bengali

An unnamed man speaking American English reads the English portions of the lessons, and a native speaker supplies the Bengali.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is a copy of the original recording (made at the behest of P.S. Ray?), which forms part of a series of 17 recordings based on a Spoken Bengali course (identity not certain). Note: A note (written by JJT) found in the carton holding this tape states: "These materials appear to be {classroom/lang. lab} copies of field recordings. There are two complete sets and one incomplete. JJT-2/8/80" [The extra copies have long since been discarded.] (From the P.S. Ray Collection) WAVE file is now converted to an MP3.

Mrs. Cheng Yang Borchert (of the U. of C. faculty) voices the last seven lessons of the textbook, Read Chinese: A Beginning Text in the Chinese Character ("Book I") (New Haven Conn.: Far Eastern Publications, Yale University, 1972-73).
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is the live recording made off-campus by Mrs. Borchert c. 1973 at the behest of C.C. Chao (the Chinese instructor). Note: This is almost certainly the only part of the revised text that was deemed necessary to record. The WAVE files are now convertert to MP3s.

In brief recorded remarks that he recorded (perhaps) at Indiana University c. 1963, Kazazis appears to be rehearsing an upcoming address to a linguistic conference.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is an excerpt cut from the full reel, which had originally contained Units 1-3 of "Spoken Hungarian" but was treated as scrap and re-used for other material. (The rest of the tape has been discarded.) Note: Kazazis' recorder apparently ran at some non-standard speed, so the voice here is restored to sound "natural". The WAVE file is now converted to an MP3.

Apparently in connection with Hamp, et al.'s study of the Kalaallisut language, Olson reads various Kalaallisut passages from a book called “Characters of the Greenland Mythology”.

Collection Descriptive Notes: 
Two unnamed native speakers (a man and a woman) engage in a (scripted?) exchange. Neither the date nor the place of the original recording are known.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Recording is Side A of an "Audiodisc 6091" disc cut c. 1940 (judging from the brand) and containing Carib music (q.v.) on the other side. The improbable pairing of Zapotec and Black Carib suggests that these are dubs from other sources. WAVE file is now converted to an MP3.

Lakota vocabulary from a Swadesh list (de Reuse, 1988)

De Reuse puts vocabulary tokens from a Swadesh list to Vincent Catches, who supplies the Lakota equivalents. This recording was made on 5/9/88 at the Language Laboratory in connection with the Linguistics Field Methods de Reuse taught in Spring Quarter, 1988.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Master cassette may or may not be the original recording, which was done on a cassette machine. WAVE file is now converted to an MP3.

Butzer lectures on his specialty, physical geography, apparently as part of his course given at The University of Chicago in Winter 1967. (It is not known why these two lectures came to the Language Lab or why there are only two of them.)

Kazazis and Petrokheilos converse in Greek (1968)

Native Greek speaker, Kostas Kazazis, engages in spontaneous Greek dialog with a Mr. Petrokheilos (and one other man) on a variety of topics. The location for all the conversations is probably the U. of C. campus (including Kazazis' office).
