Speaking in French, Salikoko Mufwene gives an address in line with the theme of the conference, "Quel avenir pour les langues?" He surveys various languages around the world and assesses their viability in the context of the globalized economy.

Collection Technical Notes:

Cassettes may or may not be the live recordings, but they appear to cover the entire session (of the first day?). Note: Only Salikoko's introduction by Jérôme Bindé and his address to the meeting has been digitized.

Eric P. Hamp, speaking French, conducts interviews with native speakers of Breton in the village called Ploemel (France).

These are the five original field recordings. Note: The recordings are marred by intrusive noises. The WAVE file (made from the DAT) is converted to an MP3.

Tsakonian: a Swadesh glottochronology test list with texts (Hamp, 1956)

Speaking French, Hamp reads a Swadesh list to evoke Tsakonian tokens from Mr. Thanassius Kostakis (Athens,spring 1956). The interview concludes with Kostakis reciting some narratives.

Collection Technical Notes:

Tapes are the original field recordings. Mrs. Margot Hamp operated the tape recorder, which was a Magnemite (with one center track). The backs of the boxes have been scanned, and WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.
