Collection Descriptive Notes:
Manuel Andrade interviews several consultants from Santa Cruz Barillas, Santa Eulalia and Soloma (in the State of Huehuetenango in Guatemala). The consultants illustrate certain linguistic features, engage in spontaneous conversation, and relate several narratives. [Note: In McQuown's usage a "text" was a discrete unit of speach.]
Collection Technical Notes:
Phonograph records consist of 38 field-recorded aluminum discs cut by Manuel Andrade in Guatemala c. 1935. They divide into three series: 1) A single Spanish-language disc [=Ser. 0]; 2) (An earlier?) series labeled "Jacalteca" (five discs) [=Ser. 1]; and 3) a series labeled "JACALTEC" (32 discs) [=Ser. 2]. (The blank record stock Andrade used was manufactured by Walter C. Garwick of Rye, New York.) Note: Conflicting numbering schemes result from N.A. McQuown's determination to rearrange the the collection according to subject matter such as pronunciation, grammar and narrative. Note also: Andrade's name does not appear on any of the discs but is supplied from NAM’s notes. Note again: On the first disc ("zero") on hears an English-speaking man (with an American accent) commenting on noise in the room; he is conceivably the actual operator of the disc-cutter. Further note:
the DMA assistant chose to use the tape versions of the discs to digitize since their sound quality was superior to that made directly from the discs on a modern turntable.
