Master is a tape dubbed c. 1960 almost certainly from the two phonograph records that are listed in the Collection "Spoken Chinese - Basic Course", ID#1089, q.v. Why this course is ascribed to the Holt publishing company (i.e., on the back of the box) is not known. Note: The WAVE file was digitized from the tape dub rather than the original discs inasmuch as the sound on the tape is superior to any present-day phonograph playback.

Class instructor, Mr. C.C. Chao, revised and re-recorded these lessons for his elementary Chinese class. (As in the case of the version recorded c. 1971, these are based on the textbook Mandarin Primer by Prof. Yuen Rao Chao (Harvard University Press, 1948).
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are the DATs with the final (edited) versions of the lessons that Chao approved and used in his classes. (The original studio recordings and various intermediate-stage edited versions have not been retained.) WAVE files are converted to MP3s.

An American man introduces the lessons and reads the English tokens, which are rendered twice in Chinese by the native speaker--with pauses for the student to repeat. [Note: The Pronunciation Exercises were dubbed as a separate series (q.v.).]
Collection Technical Notes: 
Phonograph records are the discs that were originally issued by the War Department. The set consists of 24 discs out of 25 (Disc No. 16--with the continuation of Unit VIII--is missing.). The names of the authors are supplied from the notes of N.A. McQuown. Note: The Pronunciation Exercises (1-30) have been digitized as a separate series (see: ID#1085). Special note: the lessons on the tape have been determined to be superior in sound quality to any that might be done today from the discs themselves on the DMA's turntable: i.e., the WAVE files are to be made from the tapes. The WAVE files are converted to MP3s.

Mr. C.C. Chao and Mrs. Betty Yang voice the dialogs, vocabulary and pattern drills from Lessons 1-24 of the text, Speak Chinese, by M. Gardner Tewksbury, published for the Institute of Far Eastern Languages by Yale University Press, New Haven, 1948. (It is not clear which edition was used, inasmuch as a revised version of Lessons 1-6 was issued in 1971.) (The texts may be found in Regenstein Library.)

Masters were recorded off-campus, using the Tewksbury text(s?). They were donated to the LLA by Chao on 7 November 2002. The WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.
