Hanks interviews Alfonso Contreras in Oxcutzcab, Yucatán, Mexico, on 21 July 1977. Contreras comments on the rain ceremony, which is heard on Track 2 of this tape.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tape is a dub from a field-recorded C-90 cassette lent by Hanks to the Language Lab. (It is not clear whether the ceremony was on the same cassette as the interview.) WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

Phonograph record (Andrade's No. 102)is a subset of the first 102 aluminum discs made by Andrade in c. 1933, and it was dubbed onto tape by John Wahl (see I.D.# 67). Since McQuown did not consider it part of the "texts" (or narratives), he gave it its own shelf number. WAVE file is now converted to an MP3.

The two (male) native speakers that Andrade consulted on the other recordings voice a number of what can be called "transformation drills": a word or sentence is introduced, then systematic changes are applied to them.

Male native speaker voices words, phrases and whole sentences without giving any introduction or slates. (Only McQuown's notations on the sleeves provide any information on these discs.)
Collection Technical Notes: 
Phonograph records are three 10-inch, needle-cut discs that form a subset of Andrade's Yucatec recordings of the early 1930s and which he numbered 118, 119 and 120. Note: the sound quality of these recordings is extremely poor, and their features (like the "knocking sounds" after each utterance) mark them out as different from all the other discs attributed to Andrade. A clue from the "Bacalar" recording (YCT 49.BLR.AND.1.1 (OD)): this disc and the three above were apparently dubbed from cylinders. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

Under the supervision of M. Andrade, consultant Bernadino Tun tests the researcher's disc-cutting equipment by making some remarks and singing two songs.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Phonograph record (Andrade's No. 1) is a 10-inch, needle-cut, aluminum disc that forms a subset of the 123 discs Andrade made c. 1933 in the Yucatán. Since Norman McQuown did not consider this a part of the "Cuentos" series (I.D.# 67), he gave it its own shelf code. In 1958 John Wahl dubbed this disc as part of his seven-tape series (see I.D.# 67) making it the first disc in his series.

Manuel Andrade supervises eight native speakers (all male), who are recorded recounting several "cuentos" (or "texts").
Collection Technical Notes: 
Phonograph records are the 100 original, needle-cut aluminum discs made by (or under the supervision of) M. Andrade c. 1933. The figure of 100 includes Discs Nos. 2-101 (as Andrade numbered them) and the (interpolated) Disc No. XV. Note that the digitizing of these recordings was done via the tape dubs (see I.D.# 67) since they were deemed superior in sound than the DMA can produce at this time.) Note: The transcriptions of these texts are on microfilm in Regenstein Library under:
MCMCA, Series XIX, No. 108.

Writing from New York City, DeBlois tells about his experiments "studying oral air movements" using a new "pen-and-paper recorder" that he had developed. He encloses eleven such paper records with his letter.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Text consists of 1) the mailing envelope, 2) the letter itself (three trypewritten sheets) and 3) eleven strips of paper (2.25 inches wide and of varying lengths) that are printouts from some kind of device to measure "oral air movements".
