Collection Technical Notes: 
Phonograph records are the sixteen 10-inch, 78 rpm, monophonic lacquer Linguaphone discs issued by Linguaphone c. 1930 and stored in their (original?) carrying case. Four texts pertaining to this course were also included with the discs. (From the McQuown donation) WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

Mr. C.C. Chao and Mrs. Betty Yang voice the texts and exercises of Lessons 1-20. The text they used was probably the revised edition and eighth printing of Pao-ch’en Lee's Read About China (New Haven: Far Eastern Publications, Yale University, 1972). This text may be found in Regenstein Library.

Native speaker (female) does a fluent reading of the the 22 selections (with the vocabulary) from the 1967 (revised) edition of the text (New Haven: Far Eastern Publications, Yale University, 1967). The recording was made at Seton-Hall University in August 1967 ("for Yale University"). Regenstein Library holds a copy of the text.

Native speaker (male), who is probably Shadick's collaborator, Ch'iao Chien, voices each text selection twice--once fluently, then with pauses for repetition. The texts are drawn from Volume II of the three-volume set, A first Course in Literary Chinese, by Harold Shadick (Ithica, NY: Cornell University Press, 1968). The set may be found in Regenstein Library.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Masters are copies made c. 1971 for C.C. Chao, who donated them to the LLA in 2003. The recordings are not complete inasmuch as Selections 34 & 35 were not copied. No other information is known about the recordings. The WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

Exercises 1-16; Tests 1-6. The exercises consist entirely of the pronunciation of minimal pairs with a pause for repetition. A tone on the left channel marks one or the other of the tokens. (It appears that a man speaking American English joined the speakers in the studio and supervised them.)
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes were recorded in the studio of the Language Lab in June-July 1963; John E. Wahl and Donald H. Ledin, rec. engs. (The identity of the recording engineers is based on the handwriting on the back of the boxes.) Each tape was edited (by Wahl?, by Ledin?) to eliminate false starts, errors, etc. (Unreviewed) WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.
