Tapes are the tapes sent from the University of Wisconsin--Madison; wound off onto hubs from the original seven-inch reels by JJT on 6/29/76. “These recordings differ from the final version in some idioms and follow a numbering system entirely different.”--from the Reel 2 box. Note: At the beginning of Tape 1 the speaker says, "Tamil lessons for second year". Note: the term "pilot version" was assigned to these tapes in 1976 by James Lindholm in his global survey of all the Tamil tapes recorded up to that time. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s

Native speaker (female), using the "Brahmin" dialect, voices Lessons 1-20 from the 1967 textbook, leaving spaces for student repetition. (She introduces each tape with the title, "Tamil Conversations".)
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are the live recordings done at the Language Laboratory studio in Aug. 1967. It is highly probable that the 1967 Chicago text was the recording script. Note: The speaker uses "lesson" rather than "unit" on the tapes; i.e., JJT's labeling on the boxes is wrong. This series was given a further numbering as "Series 9". The above title and the coding of the digitized files adopts the latest style ("version for repetition", etc.) though no such labeling exists on either the tape or the box. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.

Native speaker (female), using the "non-Brahmin" dialect, reads each sentence of Lessons 1-18 three times. (She introduces the first tape with the words "Tamil Spoken; Conversation Lessons".) The recordings were made at the University of Wisconsin, and the text that was used is an earlier version of Intermediate Tamil: the “John-Gopaalan” Conversations. Note:The numbering of the lessons does not correspond to that of the final text.

Each play (“aaru maNikkuL”, “singiL Tii”, “enrum muppatu”, “cuvarroTTi”, and “viiTTu taraku”) is presented as broadcast (from Trichy station of All-India Radio in the winter and spring of 1966) with each scene followed by a slow reading of the scene and variation drills. The text, by Harold Schiffman is now to be found in Regenstein Library.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes were dubbed in 1972 from the 3.75 ips, half-track copies sent from the U. of Washington and lent to the LLA by James Lindholm. Note: the spelling of the plays’ titles conforms to the conventions of Schiffman’s text.
