The method involves the pronunciation of an English word or phrase, followed by the Xhosa equivalent spoken twice. (No text was supplied by the donor of the tapes.)

Collection Descriptive Notes: 
A woman and a man, speaking English, introduce the lessons, which are voiced by one (or more?) native speakers (male). The recordings accompany (most probably) Abdel-Massih's text of 1975. The contents are: Part I: Phonology drills 1-8; Part II: Introductory units, Greetings; Units 1-20; Part III: Texts 1-43; Part IV: Proverbs 1-40 [Proverbs 41-100 are missing from the tape.]
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are the cassettes prepared (c. 1983?) at the Michigan Media facility at Ann Arbor and added to the LLA collection on 5/24/83. Since the last cassette lacked recording on Side B, Proverbs 41-100 were recorded at the LLA as a supplement in 1985.

An American man, speaking English, introduces the 50 lessons, and various (male) native speakers voice the Amharic text: Amharic Basic Course, published by the Foreign Service Institute (Washington, D.C., in two volumes (1964-65). They may be found in Regenstein Library.
Collection Technical Notes: 
Tapes are the copies on five-inch reels sent to the LLA from F.S.I. c. 1969. They were subsequently run off onto hubs by JJT in 1970. The original recordings were probably made before the publication date of the volumes. (Unreviewed) WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.
