Tape was dubbed from the last of four tapes lent to the Language Lab by McDavid. McDavid's copies were made, in turn, from the original recordings on wire made between 1960 and 1962 (probably) at the University of Louisville. Notes of the dubber of this tape (in red ink on the back of the box): "(last part of this side [Side II] impossible to reclaim because of variable areas in recording speed) Can't get the chipmunks out of it) / During cuttings, splicings, re-recording etc. I estimate about 1½ - 2 hrs. of the total was lost." The date of the dubbing may be fixed by a note tucked into the box of the first tape dated 12/27/62. Around forty minutes into the recording on Side One the pitch of the voices begins to rise (as the battery in the tape recorder runs down), though on Track One the dialog remains intelligible. Further note: the sound quality is very poor. |
