Collection Descriptive Notes:
On most of the recordings two researchers (Williams and Cubillos) administer a Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) to each of several native speakers (male and female), who respond in either Spanish or Tzeltal. On other tapes from Sibacá, Williams and an unnamed female interviewer, speaking Spanish, read tokens from a standard vocabulary list in order to elicit the Tzeltal equivalents from the native speakers. On yet other tapes the native speakers (male and female) tell stories. The dialect specified here is "Tzeltal norteño".
Collection Technical Notes:
With the exception of Track 2 of Tape 9, tapes are the eleven original field recordings done in Sibacá (a barrio of Ocosingo) in 1961. It was N.A. McQuown, apparently, who designated them a group and numbered them using Roman numerals. WAVE files are now converted to MP3s.
